- History of David Kump & Barbara Naylor Kump

David Kump was born May 6, 1801, in York County, Pennsylvania. He was one of eight children born to Johannes (John) Kump and Barbara Bentzel Kump. He grew up in Dover Township, York County, Pennsylvania, which is about seven miles north of York. His father was a farmer. David learned the skills and hard work of farm life from his father and grandfather in a community of German speaking people, neighbors and friends.
At the age of 24, David married Barbara Naylor, age 19, in 1825 as recorded in the Christ Lutheran Church in York, Pennsylvania. Barbara Naylor was born January 25, 1806, in York County, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Jacob and Barbara Schmidt Naylor.
When Jacob and Barbara were married, their first home was in Westmanchester, York County, a few miles south of Dover. Their first three children were born here.
(1) Carolina Kump was born March 11, 1826. She married Henry Plum in 1842.
(2) Edward Kump was born February 5, 1828. He married Polly Ann Plum November 20, 1856. Edward died May 28, 1912 , at Ft. Atkinson, Jefferson County, Wisconsin. He was buried May 31, 1912, at Ft. Atkinson. Polly Ann Plum Kump died March 28, 1920 at Ft. Atkinson. She was buried March 31, 1920 at Ft. Atkinson.
(3) Zachariah Kump was born July 3, 1830. He married (1) Elizabeth Ann Cloward January 1, 1868 at Moroni, Sanpete County, Utah. He married (2) Catherine Ann Cloward in 1875. Zachariah died June 20, 1904 at Chester, Sanpete County, Utah and was buried June 23, 1904 at Moroni City cemetery, Sanpete County, Utah.
In 1831 David and his family moved from Pennsylvania to Poland Township, Trumbull County, Ohio. There was Federal land available in Ohio for homesteaders. In 1846 Poland township was located in a new county, Mahoning County which originally was Trumbull County. David took up homestead land to farm. Four more children were born to David and Barbara at Poland Township.
(4) Mary Amanda Kump was born December 16, 1832. She married George Andersen Storey on August 8, 1849 at Stevens Point, Portage County, Wisconsin. Mary Amanda died September 10, 1903 at Moroni, Sanpete County, Utah and was buried in the Moroni city cemetery.
(5) Lewis Kump was born in 1836. He married Caroline Charelson on October 27, 1861.
(6) Harriet Kump was born April 21, 1838. She married James Carpenter on August 29, 1856. Harriet died in September 1877. James died in February 1879.
(7) Israel “Ese” Kump was born in 1843.
The 1840 census record indicates that David and his family lived in Poland, Trumbull County, Ohio. The 1850 census record indicates that David and his family lived in
Koshonang, Jefferson County, Wisconsin. The 1860 census record shows them living in Summer, Jefferson County, Wisconsin.
David Kump died January 27, 1872 at the age of 71 in Summer, Jefferson County, Wisconsin. He was buried in 1872 at the Union Cemetery in Summer, Jefferson County, Wisconsin.
Barbara Kump died February 19, 1880 at the age of 74 in Summer, Jefferson County, Wisconsin. She was buried in February 1880 in the Union Cemetery in Summer, Jefferson County, Wisconsin.
The estate of David and Barbara Kump was settled March 11, 1881. Administrator was Edward Kump, their oldest son.

1801 David was born 6 May 1801 to John and Barbara Bentzel Kump in York County, Pennsylvania. He grew up in Dover Township which was about 7 miles north of York. His father was a farmer. David learned the skills of farming from his father and grandfather in a community of German speaking friends.
1825 At the age of 24 he married Barbara Naylor. They setup housekeeping in West Manchester a few miles south of Dover. Children born here were: Caroline 25 Jan 1826, Edward 5 Feb 1828, Zachariah 3 Jul 1830.
1830 Pennsylvania Census lists David as head of household at West Manchester Township.
1830 to 1832 Federal land available in Ohio for settlers, so David and his brother, Daniel, with their families moved to Poland Township, Trumbull County, Ohio. In 1846 Poland was located in a new county, Mahoning, which was originally Trumbull County.
1832 to 1845 4 children were born to this family in Ohio, however no birth dates have been found even though correspondence with the churches in Poland has been made: Mary Amanda about 1832, Lewis about 1834, Harriet about 1837, and Israel about 1845.
1840 Ohio Census lists David as the head of household at Poland Township, Trumbull County. Lists 1 male age 5-10, 2 males age 10-15, 1 male age 40-50, 1 female age 1-5, 1 female age 5-10, 1 female age 10-15, and 1 female age 30-40.
1846 Mahoning County made from Trumbull and Columbiana Counties, which places Poland in the new Mahoning County.
1850 Wisconsin Census lists the Kump family at Town of Koshkonong, Jefferson County, indicating a move to Wisconsin. The census lists David as a “farmer” and his two oldest boys, Edward and Zachariah, as “laborers”. The census lists David, Barbara, and children, Edward, Zachariah, Amanda, Lewis, Harriet, and Israel.
1856 David and family in Sumner Township, Jefferson County, Wisconsin. Edward married Polly Ann Plum 20 Nov 1856. Harriet married James Carpenter 29 Aug 1856.
1860 Wisconsin Census shows Kump family at Sumner Township, Jefferson County. Both David and Lewis were listed as “Farmers.” Barbara and Israel are also listed.
1861 Lewis married Carolina Charleson 27 Oct 1861 of Oakland, Wisconsin.
1870 Wisconsin Census shows Kump family at Sumner Township, Jefferson County. David, Barbara, and Israel are the only family members listed at the time of census. Both David and Israel are listed as “Farmers.”
1872 David died 27 Jan 1872 at age 70-8-21 and buried at Sumner Township, Jefferson, Wisconsin.
1880 Barbara died 19 Feb 1880 at age 74-1-14 and buried at Sumner Township, Jefferson, Wisconsin.
